The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3 · Why Act at All

Work as Offering

Bhagavad Gita 3.9

Meaning · English

Apart from action done for the sake of sacrifice, this world is bound by its own work. So, son of Kunti, do your action for that sake, free from attachment, and perform it well.

Three words carry it. Yajna is sacrifice: an offering, an act given away to something larger than oneself. Bandhana comes from a root meaning to tie, so karma-bandhana is being tied up by one's own work. Sanga is sticking, a clinging to the reward or to oneself as the one who did it. Mukta-sanga is a person who has come loose from that. Krishna has just told Arjuna that action beats inaction and that even the body cannot be kept going without it. A worry follows: if work ties knots, how can anyone act at all? Krishna answers that the knot comes from the purpose, not from the work. Action done only for what it brings back to oneself binds the world. Action done as an offering does not. So he asks Arjuna to keep working for that offering's sake, with the clinging cut, and to do it properly, with care and skill. Shankara takes yajna as duty done as worship of God. Ramanuja reads it as work that serves the Lord. Madhva reads it as work offered to Vishnu, with knowledge of his supremacy.

A relay runner grips the baton only so she can pass it on. While she holds it tight, her hand is tied up and the race is stalled. When she hands it over, the hand opens and she runs free. Work is like that baton: it is meant to be passed on, and clinging to it is what binds.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message that has waited. 2. Before you begin, name one person or purpose beyond yourself that it serves. 3. Do it carefully for ten minutes, without checking whether anyone notices. 4. When it ends, notice whether you reach for thanks or relief. Only notice. Do the same again tomorrow.

A tailor sits up late finishing a wedding blouse. He is thinking about the payment, the customer who complained last time, and whether he will be blamed for a crooked seam. His shoulders ache, and the stitching gets worse as he worries. Krishna's teaching changes the moment step by step. First the tailor asks whom the blouse is for: a bride, a family, a day that will not come twice. Then his attention moves from the verdict to the seam in front of him. The fear of blame loosens its grip, and the work is done with a steadier hand. Ordinary experience bears out one small part of this: attention spent on dread is not available for the task. The teaching does not promise that the customer will be kind, that the payment will arrive, or that tiredness will vanish. A person who is ill or exhausted still needs rest, and a doctor where one is needed. It speaks to the spirit in which the work is done, not to what the work will return.
