Giving Built Into Creation

Bhagavad Gita 3.10

Meaning · English

Along with sacrifice, Brahma, lord of creatures, made humankind in the beginning and said: by this you shall increase and prosper. Let it be the giver of everything you wish for.

Three words carry it. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering given up for a shared good. Here it stands for work done as a gift, not only for fire rituals. Prajapati means lord of creatures, and names Brahma, the creator. Ishta-kama-dhuk means a giver of wishes, like a cow that yields whatever is asked of her. Krishna tells Arjuna that when Brahma made humankind, he made them together with yajna. The two came as a pair. Brahma then told them that by this they would increase and prosper, and that it would grant their wishes. The reason sits just behind it. Krishna has said that action done for no offering binds a person. His answer is that giving was never a burden added later. It was part of life from the start, and prosperity grows from it. What he asks of Arjuna is to see his own duty as one share in that offering. Shankara reads yajna as the rites and duties laid down for each person. Ramanuja reads these acts as worship of the Supreme, carried out through the gods. Madhva reads such duty as service offered to Vishnu.

A village well is dug by many hands, and every family draws from it. It stays sweet only because each family also takes a turn clearing the leaves and mending the rope. The well is the wish-giver. Taking and tending were never two separate things. They were one arrangement from the day it was dug.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you do anyway, such as cooking, washing up, or answering a message, and do it as a small gift for someone in the house. 2. Tomorrow, before you take something shared, like the last portion or the front seat, give a small share to someone first. 3. Once this week, at the end of a task, say quietly to yourself who it was for besides you. 4. Notice, for a few days, whether the task felt lighter when it was for someone.

A retired schoolteacher stands at her gate with a basket of mangoes from the tree in her yard. There are far more than she can eat. For a moment she thinks of keeping them all, in case the season is poor next year. The verse points to another step. Krishna tells Arjuna that the first people were given offering and prosperity together. So she asks who nearby could use some. She carries half to the neighbour whose husband is ill and leaves some at the watchman's stool. The rest she keeps for herself without guilt. Ordinary experience confirms that people who give often find their neighbours giving back, and that a shared load is easier to carry. The verse does not promise that a given mango returns as a mango, or that giving cures sickness, pays a bill, or removes loss. It also does not say that her own needs are wrong. It says that giving belongs inside a life of getting, and that Brahma, in the text's account, set them together at the start.
