Nourishing Each Other

With these sacrifices, please the gods, and those gods will be pleased with you. Pleasing one another in this way, you shall achieve the supreme prosperity.
Three words carry this teaching. Bhavayata comes from a root meaning to bring into being, to foster, to nourish, so "please" here is closer to "sustain." Parasparam means one another: the care runs both ways. Shreyah, rendered prosperity, means real welfare, the lasting good. Krishna tells Arjuna that what people offer in sacrifice nourishes the gods, and the gods in turn nourish the people. Neither side only gives and neither only receives. Because each tends the other, both arrive at the highest welfare. He says this right after warning that work done only for oneself binds a person. The answer to that bondage is to see life as an exchange in which one is a link and not the end of the chain. Taking without returning breaks it. He asks Arjuna to act as a partner in that exchange. The commentators read it differently. Shankara takes the highest welfare to be liberation, reached through knowledge, with sacrifice purifying the mind along the way. Ramanuja reads the gods as forms of the Supreme, so that the offering finally reaches the Lord. Madhva holds that the gods are honoured as dependent on Vishnu, who is the true recipient of the worship.
Two people work a long two-handled saw through a log. Each pulls and then lets go so the other can pull. If one grips and refuses to release, the blade jams and neither cuts. The saw moves because each side yields in turn, as gods and people each feed the other.
1. Tonight, before you eat, name one person whose work put the meal in front of you, such as a farmer, a cook or a driver. Take ten seconds to do it. 2. Tomorrow, give something small before you ask for anything, such as a message of thanks, a held door or a cup of tea made for someone else. 3. At the end of the day, notice whether anything came back to you, and whether you were keeping count.
A man moves into a new flat on a Sunday, and by evening the water pump has failed. He knows nobody. A neighbour he has only nodded to knocks and offers two buckets of water. He accepts, and a week later carries up her grocery bags when the lift is out. Within a month they trade spare keys, recipes and warnings about the landlord. Look at how it went. Nobody drew up a contract, and each act of help made the next easier to ask for and to give. Once he is part of the exchange, he stops being a stranger, and his own comfort is tied to hers. Ordinary experience confirms that favours returned build trust, and that people who only take find doors closing. The teaching in the Gita goes further than a neighbourly bargain, since it speaks of gods and sacrifice, and it is Krishna's teaching about how the world is held together. It does not promise the pump will be mended, that every kindness will be returned, or that giving will cure loneliness or grief.
