One who wishes to go into the forest should leave his wife in his sons' care, or else take her with him. He should live in the forest itself, calm, through the third part of his life. He should make his living from clean wild roots, tubers and fruits. He should wear bark for clothing, and use grass, leaves and animal skins.

Krishna is describing the third stage of life, after the householder years. Four words carry it. Kanda, mula and phala are tubers, roots and fruits, the food a forest gives without a plough. Medhya means clean, fit and pure. Shanta, from a root meaning to grow quiet, is the calm he asks the forest-dweller to bring along. Valkala is bark cloth. The clauses go in order. A man ready to enter the forest first settles his home. He hands his wife to his sons, or she goes with him. Krishna allows both. He stays in the forest itself and does not drift back to town. This takes the third part of a lifespan. He feeds himself on what grows wild and is clean. He dresses in bark, and sits and sleeps on grass, leaves and hides. The reason comes from the question Uddhava has been given: how should a life be spent once its first duties are done. Krishna answers that the years of earning and raising children give way to years of having little and growing quiet. The commentators read the plain food and clothing as removing the daily pull of wanting more. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and its details are not a rule for today. What still speaks is the idea that each stage of life has its own duty, and that simplicity belongs to the later one.

A walker at the foot of a long trail unpacks the bag on the grass. Out go the spare shoes, the extra books, the tins. What stays is water, bread and a coat. Krishna's forest life is that repacking: the life carries only what the day's walking needs.

1. Tonight, pick one meal and make it from plain, simple food only: fruit, a boiled root vegetable, or both. Eat it slowly and sit quietly for five minutes afterwards. 2. This week, choose one drawer or shelf and take out everything you have not used in a year. Notice how the room feels afterwards. 3. Spend ten minutes outside under a tree or open sky with your phone put away. Note what your mind reaches for.

A grandmother stands in her kitchen the evening after her youngest son's wedding. Her hands still measure rice for six, though only two will eat. She does not know what the house wants of her now. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in small steps. She cooks the smaller meal and lets the daughter-in-law decide how the new household runs. She keeps one plain task that is hers alone, a walk, or an hour in the garden. The years of managing everyone are allowed to end, and the quieter years are allowed to begin. Krishna asks the forest-dweller to be shanta, calm, and she sees that calm comes from having set something down, not from having failed at it. Ordinary experience agrees that a life's tasks change with its seasons, and that clinging to an old role makes us restless. Today's nutrition also holds that meals built on fruit, roots and other plant foods are good for the body. Bark clothing and sleeping on hides have no particular health value. The teaching does not promise that the empty house stops echoing, or that grief at the change disappears. A doctor is still the one to see for failing health.
