He lets his hair, body hair, nails, beard and the dust of the body be, and does not scour himself clean. He dips in water at the three junctures of the day and sleeps on bare ground. In summer he sits among five fires. In the rains he lies open to the downpour. In the cold season he stands in water up to his neck. Living so, he practises austerity.

Krishna is describing the third stage of life, the forest-dweller, to Uddhava. Three words carry it. Tapas is austerity, from tap, to heat: a discipline that warms and tempers, like a fire that burns off dross. Sthandila is a patch of bare, levelled ground, the hermit's bed. Trikala means the three times of day, dawn, noon and dusk, when he dips in water. Krishna then walks through each clause. The hermit leaves his hair, nails, beard and body unadorned and does not scour himself for looks or comfort. He bathes only to keep his three daily rites. He lies on bare earth. The commentators usually read the five fires as four fires lit around him with the sun overhead. In the rains he sits uncovered under the downpour. In winter he stands neck-deep in cold water. Krishna gives this because Uddhava has asked about the stages of life, and the forest stage is where a person who has finished with house and work lets comfort fall away. The reason is plain in the text: this way of living is austerity. It asks the listener to see that this stage is chosen hardship, taken up to loosen the grip of comfort and appearance, not hardship for its own sake. It is the Bhagavata's picture of its own age, not a rule for today. What still speaks is simplicity: knowing which comforts one leans on.

Think of a blacksmith plunging a glowing blade into water and returning it to the fire. The metal is not punished. Heat and cold together take out brittleness and leave it hard and true. The hermit's heat, rain and cold are the forge, and his own restlessness is the metal being tempered.

1. Pick one small comfort you reach for without thinking, such as the fan, a cushion, a hot drink or your phone in bed. 2. Do without it for twenty minutes this evening, sitting on a plain floor or mat if you can. 3. Notice how soon the wish to fix the discomfort arrives, and how it fades if you wait. 4. Stop at once if you feel unwell. Skip this if heat or cold is a health risk for you.

A man in a village house sits through an afternoon power cut. The fan is dead, the tin roof is ticking with heat, and his hand keeps going to the switch. He has no way to fix it. For a few minutes he is simply hot, and then he notices that the heat is a sensation he can watch, separate from the complaint about it. He moves to the shade, drinks water, and sits on the cool floor. The restlessness is still there but no longer rules him. Ordinary experience confirms this much: discomfort met on purpose feels smaller than discomfort fled. What the text describes goes far beyond that. Sitting among fires or standing neck-deep in winter water can cause heatstroke, hypothermia and skin damage, and a family doctor would warn anyone off them, especially the old, the ill and the very young. Going unwashed also invites infection. The teaching does not promise freedom from discomfort, and it is no substitute for medical care. It belongs to the forest stage as the Bhagavata pictures it.
