What Cannot Change Its Nature

Those who argue for it say that what is unborn comes to birth. But the unborn is deathless. How could it ever become mortal? The deathless does not become mortal, and the mortal does not become deathless. A thing's own nature can never, in any way, turn into something else.
Gaudapada takes a claim his opponents make and shows it cannot hold. Two words carry it. Ajata means unborn, from the root jan, to be born, with the negative in front. Prakriti means a thing's own nature, from the sense of what is set down first, what a thing is before anything is done to it. The first lines say that some debaters hold that the unborn reality is born. Gaudapada asks how that could be. What is unborn does not die, so it is deathless. For it to be born, it would have to become mortal, since whatever is born dies. That is the step he refuses. The last lines state the rule behind it: deathless does not turn mortal, mortal does not turn deathless, and a nature never becomes other than itself. He teaches this in the fourth chapter because his claim there is that nothing is ever truly born. If anything real could change its nature, birth would be possible. Since it cannot, birth is not real in the way it seems. Shankara reads the argument this way, as aimed at those who think the deathless self can enter change. The listener is asked to test the idea honestly. If something is truly deathless, can any story of its birth be true of it? Some of this reasoning resembles how Nagarjuna and other Buddhist thinkers of his time also questioned birth, though the schools reach their conclusions in their own ways.
Picture a stone and a flame. You may carry the stone anywhere, drop it in water, bury it, and it stays stone. If a stone ever turned into a flame, it was never a stone. A thing's nature is what stays through every handling, and that is what the verse says of the deathless.
1. Today, pick one thing you call yours by nature, such as your temper or your shyness. Ask whether it has always been present or whether it came and went. 2. Notice for a few minutes what stays the same while moods change: the one who notices. 3. Before bed, ask quietly whether that noticing was ever born, and sit with the question for two minutes without answering it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father sleeps behind a door. He keeps thinking, he is changing, he is fading, he is becoming something else. Gaudapada's teaching gives him a way to look at that thought. It asks what, in his father, is the same person who held his hand at a crossing forty years ago. The body has altered, the voice has thinned, yet the one who knows him is still addressed by name. The teaching says the deathless cannot become mortal, so what is truly his father's nature is not touched by this change. He does not have to settle the matter tonight. He can simply sit and notice that the question changes the way he waits. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: we do recognise a person across decades of change in face and body. The teaching does not stop the illness, does not take away fear or grief, and does not replace the doctors who are caring for his father. It offers only a steadier way to sit in the corridor.
