Meaning · English
If a thing is deathless by its own being, and its state then passes into mortality, how could what is deathless only through something made ever stand steady? What is born with a thing, comes with it, is natural, and was never produced is to be known as its own original nature, which never leaves it.
Four words carry the argument. Svabhava is a thing's own being, what it is by itself. Amrta is deathless, literally not-dying. Krtaka is made, produced by some act or cause. Prakriti here means original nature, the way something is at root. Gaudapada's first clause says that if something is deathless by its own being, it cannot turn mortal. The second says that if deathlessness were instead made, a result of some effort, it could not stay put, because whatever is produced can be lost. Then he defines the word he has been using. A thing's own nature has four marks: it is there from the start, it is natural, it comes with the thing, and nobody made it. Such a nature does not abandon what it belongs to. He teaches this to answer people who say the unborn can become born, or the deathless mortal. If it could, its deathlessness was never its own. Shankara reads the argument as aimed at the idea that freedom is something produced, since a produced thing would end. The question of what counts as a thing's own being was also pressed by Nagarjuna, from his own side. The reader is asked to notice the difference between what is built and what is simply so.
A copper pot, polished bright for a festival, is dull again within weeks, because the shine was put on by rubbing. The copper never needed rubbing to be copper. Deathlessness that is made is like the shine. Deathlessness that is one's own being is like the metal.
1. Today, pick one thing you have worked to build, such as a calm mood, a habit or a tidy room. Notice, once, what keeps it going. 2. Later, sit for two minutes and ask what in you needed no effort to arrive, like simply being aware that you are here. 3. Tonight, write both answers in two short lines, side by side. Look at the difference between the shine and the metal.
A grandmother is polishing the brass lamp the evening before a festival. By the next month it has dulled again, and she is not surprised. Anything she has built, a clean shelf, a fitness routine, a patient temper, holds only while the upkeep continues. A good family doctor would say much the same about health habits: they are made, and they slip when tired or ill. The verse asks her to sort her life into two piles. In one is what was produced and must be maintained. In the other is whatever the text calls own nature, which needs no polishing to remain. She can then stop reading a dull lamp as proof that something deep is lost. What she made will fade, and what was never made is not touched by the fading. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the lamp shine, does not ease grief when a made thing, a job or a friendship, is lost, and does not replace care for the body. It speaks of a different kind of lasting. Ordinary experience confirms only that made things need tending.
