Let the forest-dweller make his offerings with what the forest gives: boiled grain and cakes of meal, each at its proper season. Let him not worship me with an animal, as the Vedic rite prescribes. The daily fire offering, the rites of new moon and full moon, and the four-month observances that the Vedic sages handed down stay in place for the silent sage, just as before.
Four ideas carry the teaching. Caru is grain boiled with milk or water. Purodasha is a flat cake of ground meal baked for the fire. Agnihotra is the daily offering into the sacred fire. Chaturmasya means the vows of the four-month seasons. The muni is the silent sage, the name the text gives the forest-dweller here. Krishna tells Uddhava that the forest-dweller keeps making offerings, at the times set for them, using only boiled grain and meal cakes. He does not worship with an animal, though the Vedic rite for householders allows one. The fire rites stay: the daily fire, the new-moon and full-moon offerings, and the seasonal vows all continue as before. This answers a natural question. When a man leaves home for the forest, does his worship end, or does it harden into austerity alone? Krishna's answer is that the worship continues in plainer form. The offering gets simpler, but it does not stop. The commentators read the refusal of the animal as marking the life of the forest as gentler than the life of the home. What the teaching asks is that devotion fit the stage of life. Keep the rhythm of the rites, lighten what is offered, and harm no creature.
A grandmother who once cooked for forty guests now cooks one pot of dal each evening and lights the same lamp beside it. The feast is gone, but the habit and the care stay. The forest-dweller's worship has the same shape: smaller in what is offered, unbroken in its rhythm.
1. Choose one fixed time today, such as sunset, and spend five minutes on one small act of offering. Light a lamp or candle, or put a little water at the foot of a plant. 2. Use only what is already in your kitchen. Notice how little the act needs. 3. At the next new moon or full moon, repeat it once and note the date. Keep the same time and place each month.
A woman in her late sixties has just retired from forty years of teaching. The first Monday morning arrives, the bell does not ring, and she wonders what is left of her days. She could drop every habit and drift, or she could try to rebuild the old busy schedule. Krishna's teaching points to a third way. Keep the few fixed points that gave the day its shape, and let go of the heavy parts. She makes tea at the same hour. She sits with a lamp, offers a spoonful of rice or a flower, and speaks a few lines she knows by heart. She marks the new and full moon on the calendar. Ordinary experience says a day with a few fixed points holds together better than a day with none. The refusal of the animal also fits a plain wish to make the offering without harm. The verse does not promise that the quiet will feel full, or that loneliness or a tired body will lift. Nor does it replace a doctor's care or the company of other people when she needs them.
