Practising austerity in this way, the sage, his body thinned to a net of veins, worships me, who am made of austerity. From the world of the seers he comes to me. But whoever takes this hard-won austerity, great and leading to the highest good, and spends it on a small desire, what greater fool is there than he?

Three words carry the teaching. Tapas means austerity, from a root for heat: effort that burns and so refines. Nihshreyasa means the highest good, literally 'nothing better beyond it'. Kama means desire, and here it is paired with a word for 'tiny'. The first half finishes the picture of the forest-dweller. Krishna tells Uddhava that a sage who has kept up such austerity until his body is only veins and sinew is worshipping Krishna himself, who is 'made of austerity'. Such a sage passes through the world of the seers and then reaches Krishna. The second half is a warning. Austerity is costly: it takes years, hunger, cold and patience. Krishna says a person who spends that hard-won store on some small want is the biggest fool he can name. The reason it is taught here is that the forest life is easy to misread as a skill for getting things. Krishna sets the aim first. The effort is worth what it is aimed at, and it is aimed at him. The commentators read the second half as a plain caution about what to spend effort on. It asks the listener to notice what his own hard effort is being spent on.

A farmer carries a whole year's saved grain to the market. Before he reaches the grain merchant, he trades it all for one sweet and eats it on the road. The grain is the austerity, years of effort stored up. The sweet is the small desire. The merchant he never reached is the highest good.

1. Tonight, write down the one thing you have worked hardest at this year, and next to it what it is for. 2. Tomorrow, when you notice yourself about to spend real effort on something small, such as winning an argument or being seen, wait ten minutes. 3. Notice whether the pull is still as strong after the wait. Write one line about it.

A woman has got up at five every morning for three years to practise her singing. One evening a relative asks her to perform at a gathering, and she feels a strong wish to show off the progress and be praised. Here is what the teaching would change, step by step. She would first see that three years of mornings are a stored amount of effort, not a free supply. She would then ask what that effort was gathered for. Krishna's answer is that it was gathered for the highest good, and that spending it on a small want is a poor trade. She might still sing, but she would know what she was spending and on what. Ordinary experience confirms that effort feels cheapened when it is spent only for applause. The teaching does not promise that the wish for praise will vanish, that her singing will improve, or that rest and care for her health can be skipped. It also does not say which small wants are harmless.
