When he can no longer keep his rules, when old age has set his body trembling, let the forest-dweller place his sacred fires within himself, fix his mind on me, and enter the fire. And when he has seen that the fruits of action in every world are of the nature of hell, and dispassion has fully risen in him, let him lay the fires aside and go forth as a wanderer.
Krishna tells Uddhava how the forest years end. Three words carry it. Agni is fire, here the sacred fires a man has tended for decades for his rites. Vairagya is dispassion, from vi and raga: the colour gone out of craving, so that what once glittered looks plain. Pravrajet means 'let him go forth', from vraj, to walk. The renunciant is one who sets out, a wanderer with no fixed home. Now the clauses. First, the forest-dweller who is too frail to keep his vows, whose body shakes with age, is not asked to struggle on. He takes the fires into himself, rests his mind on Krishna, and enters the fire. The words are compact, and the commentators read them within the rite of laying the fires down. Second, there is another door that has nothing to do with age. He looks at the results of action in the worlds, which Krishna calls hell-like. When craving has truly faded, he puts the fires down and walks out. Why teach it here? Uddhava has just heard how the forest-dweller lives, and the next question is what comes after. Krishna gives two signs: the body failing or the heart cooling. The listener is asked to notice which has come, and not to cling to a stage after its season.
A tenant at the end of a long lease takes the nameplate off the door, hands back the key, and walks out carrying only what his arms can hold. The rooms served him well. The fires are the rooms, the key is the old routine, and the road is the going forth.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes and pick one duty you keep up only from habit. 2. Ask honestly whether it still serves anyone, or whether you keep it from fear of stopping. 3. If it has run its course, set a date this week to hand it to someone or put it down, and tell one person. 4. Notice how it feels to name the ending instead of dragging it on.
A retired schoolteacher of seventy-eight stands in his garden at dusk, trying to light the evening lamp he has lit for forty years. His hand shakes and the match goes out twice. His daughter steps forward and he waves her off. Krishna's teaching gives that moment a different reading. The tremor is not a failure of will. It marks the end of one stage, and the duty is not thrown away but taken inward: what the lamp stood for, remembrance of Krishna, can go on without a match. He can let his daughter strike the flame and keep his own attention on it. Ordinary experience agrees that an ageing body makes long-kept routines harder, and that forcing them brings frustration more than devotion. The sacred fires here are ritual fires and have no modern match; they are not digestion. The teaching does not stop the tremor or soften the grief of letting a lifelong habit go. A new shake in the hand is a matter for a doctor.
