Having worshipped me as the rule directs, and given all he owns to the priest, he places the sacred fires within his own breath and walks out, wanting nothing from anyone. When a brahmin takes up renunciation, the gods appear as wife and other kin and set obstacles in his path. They think: he is going beyond us, to the Supreme.

Three words carry this. Sannyasa means laying down completely: sam, fully, and ni-asa, to put down. Nirapeksa means without looking toward anything, from apeksa, expectation. Parivrajet means to wander about, from vraj, to go. Krishna describes the exit. The man first worships Krishna by the rule, then gives all he owns to the priest, so nothing is left to pull him back. He takes the household fires into his own breath, so the ritual now lives inside him, and he walks out expecting nothing. Then Krishna names the difficulty. The gods, in the form of wife and kin, put obstacles in his way, because each sees him slipping past toward the Supreme. The commentators read the gods as the powers that look after the household and its senses. Krishna says this to Uddhava because he has just described the clean break. The next question is why it is so hard. Those who love us may block the door, and Krishna does not call them villains. He asks the listener to expect the resistance and keep walking.

A swimmer wades out from the shallows. Every step, the wet sand slides and pulls at the ankles, and the people on the shore call him back. The pull is not hostile. It is simply the ground he is leaving. That is the household's hold on a man who is leaving it.

1. This week, choose one thing you own that you do not use and give it to someone who will. Do it within the day you decide. 2. Notice the first reason your mind gives for keeping it. Say that reason aloud, once. 3. Next time someone close to you objects to a good plan of yours, listen to the whole objection before answering. Ask what they are afraid of losing.

A man of sixty-two sits at the dinner table and tells his family he will sell the house, give most of his savings to a charity he trusts, and spend his last years in a small room near a temple. His daughter stops eating. His wife says, quietly, that he is being selfish. Krishna's teaching would change the next few minutes in three steps. First, he would not hear the objection as an attack, because the text says those who love us object when we go beyond them. Second, he would not argue back. He would ask what each of them fears, and answer that. Third, he would keep his course without hardness, since the text asks for wanting nothing from anyone, not for coldness. Ordinary experience confirms that people resist a change that costs them, even when they love the person changing. The teaching does not promise the family will agree, or that the grief will pass quickly. It also does not replace practical planning, such as medical care and money for those who depend on him.
