If the silent sage wears cloth at all, let it be a loincloth and one covering more, nothing beyond. Apart from the staff and the water pot, he takes up nothing else he has given up, unless he is in distress. Let him set down his foot purified by sight, drink water purified by cloth, speak words purified by truth, and act with a mind purified.

Krishna tells Uddhava what the renunciant keeps and how he moves. Three words carry it. Kaupina is the loincloth, the barest strip that covers the body. Danda is the staff and patra the water pot, the two things he is allowed to carry. Puta, repeated four times, means purified, from the root pu, to cleanse. First, clothing: a loincloth and one covering, no more. Whatever he has given up stays given up, except in anapadi, a time of calamity. The commentators read that as the one allowance for need. Second, the four cleansings. His foot is placed only where his eye has looked, so he does not crush a living thing or fall. His water passes through cloth before he drinks. His speech is cleansed by truth, and his actions by a clear mind. Each act goes through a filter first. The question behind it is how a man who has left house and fire lives day to day, and Krishna answers with few possessions and careful acts. What it asks of the listener is plain: carry little, look before stepping, strain what you take in, and speak only what is true.

A tea strainer held over a cup. The leaves stay behind and only clear tea falls through. The foot, the water, the word and the deed each pass through a small check, sight, cloth, truth and a settled mind, before they are allowed out or taken in.

1. On one walk today, five minutes or so, look at the ground a few steps ahead before each footfall and notice how your pace slows. 2. In one conversation, ask yourself before speaking whether the sentence is true. Say it only if it is. 3. Pick one item from your bag or pocket that you do not need and leave it at home this week. Notice whether you miss it.

A young woman stops at a mountain stream on her first long trek, bottle empty, pack heavy with things she did not need. She sees what the verse would change. She looks at where her boots land on the wet stones. She dips the bottle and pours it through a cloth, and sees the grit stay behind. She asks herself, before telling the group she is fine, whether it is true. Ordinary experience bears out that care in small acts prevents many falls and quarrels. A cloth does remove visible dirt, but a doctor or any health guide would add that it does not make water safe from germs; boiling or proper filters do that, and the old practice should not be read as promising otherwise. Looking where one steps does reduce stumbles, and a lighter pack does tire the body less. The verse does not promise that her trek will be easy, that the stream is clean, or that a careful life escapes illness and accident. It asks for a small, steady attention to what goes in and out.
