Silence of speech, stillness of action and mastery of the breath are the three staffs that rule speech, body and mind. My friend, whoever lacks these is no true renunciant merely for carrying bamboo staffs. Let him beg food from the four classes, passing over those who are censured. Let him go to seven houses not chosen beforehand, and be content with whatever he gets from them.

Three words carry the teaching. Danda means a rod or staff, and also a restraint that keeps something in order. Yati, the renunciant, comes from a root meaning to hold in check. Mauna is silence, the quality of the muni. Krishna tells Uddhava that the real staffs of a renunciant are inward. Silence governs speech. Non-striving, the quiet of the body, governs action. Control of the breath governs the mind. A man who has none of these gains nothing from carrying three bamboo sticks, however much he looks the part. The commentators take this as a warning against mistaking the outward sign for the practice. Then Krishna turns to food. The renunciant begs from the four classes of society, which is the Bhagavata's picture of its own age and not a rule for today. He avoids households that are censured. He visits seven houses without having picked them in advance, so he cannot plan for the best table. He is content with what those houses give. Krishna teaches this to Uddhava because he is describing how a person living on almsgiving keeps from being ruled by wanting. He asks Uddhava to look for the discipline itself and to be satisfied with enough.

A hiker straps a trekking pole to the outside of his pack and walks the whole slope without once planting it. The pole looks useful and does nothing. The outward staff of the renunciant is that pole, and the real support is the restraint of speech, body and mind.

1. Choose one meal today and eat what is put in front of you without comment on it, good or bad. 2. For ten minutes, in one room, speak no word and make no unneeded movement. 3. In those ten minutes, simply notice your breath moving in and out, without changing it. 4. Afterward, note in one line what you reached for first when the quiet ended.

A man stands on a railway platform at night. His train is two hours late and he is hungry. The only stall left sells one plain thing, and the man beside him is already complaining loudly. Krishna's three restraints change this moment in order. First he holds his tongue, so the complaint does not pass from the stranger to him. Then he lets his body stop pacing and sits down. Then he lets the breath slow, which any family doctor would say settles a racing body. Last he takes the plain food gratefully, without hunting for a better stall. Ordinary experience agrees that hunger and tiredness make people sharp-tongued, so steadying the body first is sensible. The teaching does not promise the train will come sooner, and it does not remove real hunger or worry. If someone is faint, unwell or unsafe, the answer is care and a doctor, not endurance. The old idea of begging from seven unchosen houses has no everyday match. It points at contentment with what arrives.
