Having gone to water outside the settlement and rinsed his mouth, he stays silent. He divides the purified food, then eats all that remains of what was brought, leaving none. He goes alone over this earth, free of attachment, his senses held in check, playing in the Self, delighting in the Self, steady in the Self, seeing all alike.
Krishna is describing the last two stages of life, the forest-dweller and the renunciant, to Uddhava. Four words carry it. Vagyata comes from vac, speech, and yam, to rein in: a person whose speech is held. Nihsanga is sanga, clinging, with the clinging taken away. Atmakrida is atma, the Self, and krida, play: the Self is where he plays. Samadarshana is even-seeing, looking on everyone alike. Now the clauses. He walks to water outside the village, rinses his mouth, and keeps silent through the meal. Silence makes the meal a plain act. He divides the food, and the commentators take this as setting portions apart before he eats. Then he eats everything that was brought, without hoarding or hunting for more. After that, Krishna says he moves alone over the earth, unclinging, his senses reined in. His pleasure no longer comes from outside. Krishna calls it play in the Self, delight in the Self, steadiness in the Self. Out of that comes even-sightedness. Why teach it here? Uddhava has asked how a life should end well. Krishna answers that the end is not a loss. Food, speech and company are cut down to what is needed, and what is left is rest in the Self. For the listener, it asks for a plain relation to eating, speech and company.
A traveller sets out with one small bundle, packed once and carried on his own back. He is never waiting for a porter, and he never stops to guard a pile of belongings. The bundle is the food taken and finished. The light walk is the unclinging, solitary life.
1. Once this week, eat one meal in silence, with the phone and television off, and rinse your mouth or wash your hands first. 2. Serve yourself a modest plate, set a little aside for someone else, and finish what remains without seconds. 3. Afterwards, walk alone for ten minutes without talking, and notice what your mind reaches for.
A woman has just retired from teaching. At noon she is alone in the kitchen, and her hand goes to the phone and the television, as it always did between classes. The verse would change this meal in small steps. She rinses her mouth at the tap and sits down. She serves a plain plate and sets a little aside for the neighbour. She eats it all, slowly, without speaking. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: when attention is not elsewhere, it is easier to notice when hunger is gone and the meal is enough. After the meal she walks by herself. The old text calls what grows from this ease in one's own company, and it says the Self is its source. The verse does not promise that the empty house will stop feeling empty, or that the loss of her work will not ache. It does not replace a doctor if her appetite or mood changes. It offers one quiet meal and one quiet walk as the place to start.
