Taking refuge in a secluded, safe place, his mind made clear by remembering me, the sage should contemplate the self as one, undivided from me. With steady devotion to knowledge he should examine his own bondage and release. Bondage is the scattering of the senses toward their objects. Release is the holding of them in check.
Three words carry the teaching. Vikshepa, from vi and kship, is a throwing apart: the senses flung outward in every direction at once. Samyama, from sam and yam, is a holding together, a reining in. Abheda is non-difference, the sense that the self is not cut off from Krishna. Krishna first describes the setting for this inquiry: a secluded, safe place and a mind made clear by remembering him. In that quiet, the sage thinks of the self as one with Krishna, not split from him. Then he looks at his own condition with steady knowledge, and Krishna gives the plainest definition in the whole teaching. Bondage is not a place or a rank or a possession. It is the senses running outward and dragging the mind after them. Release is their being gathered in. This is taught here because Uddhava has just heard rules about begging, silence and wandering. Krishna now says what all those rules serve. Rules are scaffolding; the aim is a mind no longer scattered. Commentators differ on how far oneness goes. Some read it as the self's identity with the Absolute. Devotional readers take it as sameness of nature with loving relationship remaining. The listener is asked to look at his own scattering honestly, not at the world's faults.
A cracked garden hose sprays water in a dozen thin jets, and the flowerbed stays dry. Fit a firm nozzle and the same water reaches one place with force. The senses are the cracks, the water is attention, and holding them in check gathers what was always there.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or a ten-minute walk, and do only that. 2. Each time your hand reaches for the phone or your mind jumps to something else, notice it and say quietly, "scattered." 3. Bring attention back to the task without scolding yourself. 4. At night, recall how many times it happened. Do not judge the number. Simply know it.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while his father is in surgery. He checks his phone, reads a headline, puts it away, checks again. His eyes follow every nurse who passes. His mind jumps between the worst outcome and an unpaid bill. Krishna's definition names what is happening: the senses flung outward, the mind dragged after them. The verse changes the moment by small steps. He first sees the scattering for what it is, not as proof of weakness. Then he gathers it a little: phone face down, feet flat on the floor, one slow breath, attention on a single thing such as the clock or his own hands. He may also remember what the text asks him to hold in mind, that the self is not separate from Krishna. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, frightened mind scatters more easily. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, that fear will leave, or that seclusion and inquiry replace the surgeon, or a doctor for anyone whose agitation has become illness. It offers a way to stand inside the waiting.
