Therefore the sage, having brought the band of six under rein, should travel the earth with his mind on me. Turned away from petty wants, he has found in the self a great happiness. He should go into cities, villages, cattle camps and caravans only to ask for his food, and wander over a land full of holy places, rivers, mountains, forests and hermitages.

Krishna is speaking to Uddhava, and he begins with 'therefore': what follows rests on the earlier lesson that scattered senses bind and restrained senses free. Three words carry the verse. Shadvarga means 'the band of six', from shat, six, and varga, group. The commentators take it as the inner pulls that drag a person about, such as craving and anger. Madbhava means 'being in my state', a mind that keeps Krishna in view as it moves. Kshudrakama means 'small desires', the little wants that fill a day. Krishna says the sage first reins in the six. Because his mind rests on Krishna, he turns from small wants, and the reason given is that he has found a great happiness in the self, so the small ones have nothing left to offer. Then comes the way he lives. He enters towns, villages, herding camps and merchant caravans only for alms, and he roams a land of sacred rivers, hills and forests. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the last stages of life in its own age, not a rule laid on everyone now. What still speaks is the order: inner steadiness first, outer simplicity after, taking only what is needed and owing nothing to the want of more.

A man who has just eaten a full, good meal walks past a bakery window and hardly turns his head. The bread is as sweet as ever. His hunger is simply met elsewhere. The great happiness found within is the meal, and the small desires are the window.

1. Today, when a small craving arrives (a snack, the phone, a purchase), wait two minutes before answering it. Notice whether it rises, peaks and fades. 2. Once this week, sit quietly for five minutes after a meal and name one thing already enough for you. 3. When someone offers you food or help, take only what you need and thank them plainly.

A woman walks home after a long, hard week and passes a sweet shop she cannot really afford today. The wanting is strong, and she feels it in her chest and her feet. Take the verse step by step. She notices the pull as a pull, not as an order. Ordinary experience bears this out: a craving tends to rise, peak and ebb if it is not fed at once. She lets it ebb while still walking. What helps most is having something steadier to turn toward, which the text calls the great happiness in the self, and for her it might be the quiet of her own doorway and the thought of the evening ahead. The small want then loses its grip without a fight. She may still buy the sweets another day, and that is no failure. The verse does not promise that hunger, grief or tiredness go away, and it does not replace a doctor when a craving is tied to illness or compulsion. It describes a person whose centre is somewhere other than the shop window.
