Truth Carries Its Results
Yoga Sutras 2.36
Meaning · English
When truthfulness is firmly established, action and the results of action rest upon the one who holds it.
Four words carry this sutra. Satya is truthfulness, from sat, what is real: speech and thought that match how things are. Pratishtha is standing firm, like a post set deep in the ground. It means the practice has become steady, not that it is tried now and then. Kriya is action, what a person does. Phala is fruit, what action brings back. Ashraya is a resting place, a support. Taken whole, the sutra says that once truthfulness is steady, action and its fruit rest on the one who holds it. His deeds and their outcomes no longer drift apart. Patanjali says this because the sutras before it ask for a clear mind, and a divided mind is often one whose words and doings do not agree. Beside 2.35 and 2.37, this sutra names the sign that shows when a restraint has matured. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it concretely: for such a person, whatever he says comes true. If he tells someone to be righteous, that person becomes righteous. His word does not fail. Later commentators keep this reading and stress that the sign follows perfected truthfulness. It is not something to aim at.
A carpenter draws a line along a truly straight edge, and the saw cuts exactly where the line was drawn. With a warped edge, the cut wanders from the mark. Truthfulness is the straight edge, and the result of the deed is the cut that follows the line.
1. Choose one ordinary day and notice each time you say something slightly off from the facts: a rounded number, a polite excuse, a promise you doubt you will keep. 2. In the evening, write down three of these, plainly, without judging them. 3. Tomorrow, for one conversation, say only what you know to be so, and say nothing where you cannot. 4. At night, notice whether what you did matched what you said.
