Continence Gives Vigor
Yoga Sutras 2.38
Meaning · English
When continence is firmly established in a person, vigor is gained.
Three words carry the sutra. Brahmacarya is conduct (carya) directed toward the vast (brahma). In practice it means restraint of sexual appetite, continence. Pratishtha is a firm standing, a footing that no longer slips. Virya is vigor, the strength of a person who is whole and not spent. The same word covers courage and manly force. Labha is a gain, something received. Plainly: once continence has become a settled footing, vigor is gained. Patanjali does not describe a single act of holding back. He describes restraint that has become steady, and he says the gain follows from that steadiness. Why say it? The sutras before list five restraints and give each its own fruit. This is the fourth. A mind pulled outward by appetite pours its strength into one pursuit after another. Restraint keeps that strength in one place. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes brahmacarya as restraint of the hidden organ along with the other senses. He says the vigor gained lets a yogi's good qualities grow without hindrance, and makes him able to pass knowledge on to a student. The later commentators generally follow him.
A bucket with a small hole loses water on every step of the walk to the well and back. Patch the hole and the same bucket arrives full. Continence is the patch, and vigor is the water that now reaches the end of the walk.
1. Choose one small appetite, such as a snack, a scroll through your phone, or a second helping. Today, wait ten minutes before giving in to it. 2. During the wait, notice where the pull sits in your body and how it rises and fades. 3. Tonight, note whether you felt steadier or more scattered after holding back. Write one line, nothing more. 4. Repeat for a week. Keep the choice small and safe, and leave the larger matter of continence to your own circumstances.
