Non-grasping and Birth

Yoga Sutras 2.39

Meaning · English

When holding on to possessions is steady and firm, the how of one's births, the way each life comes about, is fully known.

Three words carry it. Aparigraha is non-grasping: a means not, pari means all around, graha means seizing. It is the habit of gathering things around oneself and clinging to them. Sthairya is steadiness, so the restraint is no passing mood but firmly settled. Kathamta is the how-ness, the manner in which something is. Sambodha is full, thorough knowing. Janma is birth, a life taken up. Plain sense: when a person has become steady in not grasping, a full knowing arises of how births come about, meaning how this life and the others are formed. Patanjali states this as the fruit of the restraint, just as the neighbouring sutras name fruits for the other restraints. Why say it? The sutras before it hold that the sense of ownership binds a person to bodily life. Grasping is a clinging to what one calls mine, and the body is the first thing so held. Where that clinging loosens, the question of how one came to be here can be seen. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it as knowledge of one's own births: who one was, how one was, and in the same way what one will be. The later commentators follow him in taking birth, not worldly wisdom in general, as the subject.

A closed fist around a handful of coins cannot show what is written on its own palm. Open the hand and the lines are plain to read. Grasping keeps the hand shut; letting go leaves the pattern of a life open to be seen.

1. Tonight, choose one object you keep reaching for, such as your phone or a favourite mug. Set it down across the room for ten minutes. 2. Notice the small pull to fetch it back, and say to yourself what the pull is asking for. 3. This week, pick one thing you own and do not need. Give it to someone, and watch whether you think of it again afterward.
