Cleanness and Distance
Yoga Sutras 2.40
Meaning · English
Through cleanness comes a turning away from one's own body, and no wish to be joined with the bodies of others.
Three words carry it. Shauca is cleanness, from a root meaning bright or clear. It covers the washed body and, further in, a clear mind. Jugupsa is a drawing back, a distaste. It is a cooling of interest, not a fierce hatred. Asamsarga is non-mingling: sam is together, sarga is a joining, and the a- negates it. So there is no urge to be joined. The plain sense is this. Patanjali teaches that keeping clean makes a person look closely at the body. Seeing what it is, the person loses the habit of treating it as a treasure. The same cooling reaches toward other people's bodies, and the pull to merge with them fades. Why say it? Cleanness is the first of the observances, and the sutras around this one list what each practice brings. This is the first fruit of cleanness. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes it this way: the one who purifies the body sees its flaws, grows averse to it, and so has no use for contact with other bodies. The commentators agree on the direction, a loosening of attachment to the body, and differ mainly in how strongly they word the aversion.
After a feast, someone washes the pots and sees the grease, the scraps and the burnt bits. The food that tempted them an hour ago no longer does. Close, patient cleaning shows what a thing is made of, and the craving for it eases.
1. At your next wash or bath, give the first minute to plain attention. Feel the water and the skin, and the ordinary work the body does. 2. While you wash, notice any thought that praises or scolds the body. Let it pass without argument. 3. Once this week, clear one small dirty corner of your room or kitchen. Notice the moment you stop wanting to leave it.
