Meaning · English
When the mind's clarity is cleansed, gladness of mind comes, along with attention gathered on one thing, mastery over the senses, and readiness to see the Self.
Take the words one at a time. Sattva is the mind's lucidity, its quality of being clear and light. Shuddhi is cleansing. Saumanasya is su-manas, a good or glad mind. Ekagrya is eka, one, and agra, tip: attention brought to a single point. Indriya-jaya is mastery of the sense faculties. Atma-darshana is the seeing of the Self, and yogyatva is fitness for it. The small word ca, also, joins them all. Patanjali says that when the mind's clarity is cleansed, five things follow: gladness, steady attention, command of the senses, and fitness to see the Self. The verse answers an obvious question. The preceding verses name purity and its first result, a turning away from the body. Patanjali now says what cleanness does inside the mind. It rests on the earlier teaching that the mind is clouded by grasping and by attachment. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads the four as a sequence. Gladness comes first, then one-pointedness, then mastery of the senses, then fitness for self-vision, each resting on the one before. The commentators who came after him add detail but keep this order.
A jar of pond water left still on a table. The silt drifts down, the water clears, and the stones on the bottom can be seen. The silt is what clouds the mind. The clear water is sattva, and seeing the bottom is the readiness to see the Self.
1. Tonight, spend five minutes cleaning one small thing: your face and hands, or a corner of your desk. 2. Sit quietly for three minutes afterward. Notice whether the mood is lighter than before. 3. Tomorrow, give one task ten minutes with nothing else open. Notice each time your attention leaves it, and bring it back. 4. Once this week, when you reach for your phone or a snack from habit, wait ten breaths first. Notice what the pull does.
