After the Awakening Opens

Spanda Karika 3.10

Meaning · English

From this awakening, before long, a point of light arises in the embodied one, then inner sound, then form, then taste. All of it comes because the awakening stirs and shakes the one who has a body.

Four words carry the verse. Unmesha, from the previous verses, is the opening of the eyes, the sudden upsurge of awareness. Nada is inner sound, from a root meaning to sound or hum. Bindu is a point or drop, here the first small concentrated spot of presence. Kshobha is a stirring, from a root meaning to shake. A dehin is simply one who has a body, so the verse speaks of ordinary embodied people, not of special beings. The verse says that once the upsurge is caught, a sequence follows soon. First a point appears. Then an inner sound. Then form, an inner seeing. Then taste, a felt savour. The Spanda Karikas give the reason in one word: kshobha. The awakening does not leave the embodied person as they were. It stirs them, and the senses answer from within. It is taught here because the verses before it ask how the weariness of the body and its wandering can be undone, and how one recognises the upsurge. This verse gives its fruits, so a person knows the upsurge is real. The commentators read these as signs that follow the awakening, not as things to chase. The verse asks the listener to catch the upsurge first and let the rest follow.

A sleeper is woken by a hand on the shoulder. First there is only a bright blur. Then a voice, then a face, then the taste of the tea held out. The waking comes first, and the senses fill in after it. The upsurge is the hand on the shoulder, and sound, form and taste are what returns.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet room with the lights low. 2. Stay with one plain thought, such as a name or a phrase. When it ends and the next has not yet begun, watch that gap. 3. After that, sip a little warm water slowly and notice its taste and the sounds in the room. 4. Do not look for lights or sounds. Notice only what is already there, and stop when five minutes are done.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at four in the morning. His father is behind a door and one thought loops: what if. The tea in his hand has gone cold. Then a trolley rattles past, he looks up, and for a breath the corridor is simply there: the squeak of the wheels, the green wall, the bitter tea on his tongue. The loop has let go. The verse names this moment. The text teaches that when awareness opens, sound, form and taste come forward on their own, because the opening stirs the whole embodied person. In the corridor, that means the man stops fighting the worry and lets his senses come back. Hearing, seeing and tasting steady him, and he is present when the door opens. Ordinary experience confirms that a sharp sound or taste can break a spinning mind for a moment. The verse does not promise the worry will stay away, and it does not ease the father's illness or replace the doctors.
