Katha Upanishad 2.3.13

Meaning · English

First he is to be grasped simply as 'He is.' Then he is to be known as he truly is, in both his aspects. For the one who has first grasped him as 'He is,' that true nature grows clear.

Three words carry it. Asti is 'is', from the root as, to be. Upalabdhavya means 'to be grasped, to be reached'. Tattvabhava is 'that-ness': tattva, a thing as it truly is, and bhava, its state of being. Yama tells Nachiketas that the Self is first to be taken hold of by saying, plainly, 'He is.' Only then is its real nature to be known, in both its aspects. Shankara reads the two as the Self beyond every quality, and the Self as the source of the world we see. Then comes the promise: for the one who began from 'is', the real nature becomes clear. The word for that, prasidati, carries the sense of muddy water going still. The reason lies in what Yama has just said. Speech, mind and eye cannot reach the Self, so none of them can be the first step. What remains is a simple assent that there is something to be found. Shankara takes the person who says 'it is not' to have shut the only door before looking. Yama asks Nachiketas for a starting stance, not a proof: begin from 'is', and let knowing follow.

A traveler is told that a village lies beyond the dark ridge. He cannot see it, but he believes it is there, so he climbs. Only from the top do the lights appear. The belief is the climbing; the seeing is what the climb earns.

1. Tomorrow morning, sit somewhere quiet for five minutes, before your phone. 2. On each slow out-breath, say silently, 'He is,' or 'There is something steady in me.' Do not try to picture anything. 3. When the mind argues or drifts, let it, then return to the words. 4. At the end, notice for a moment whether anything has settled, even slightly. Repeat for a week and compare.

A man sits on the edge of his bed at five in the morning. His grandmother spoke of God as near, and he feels nothing of it. He has been waiting for a feeling to arrive first, and none does. Yama's answer to Nachiketas changes the order. The Katha Upanishad does not ask for feeling or proof at the start. It asks for the plain assent, 'He is,' and says that clarity follows for the one who began there. So the man stops testing and sits for a few minutes, saying the words slowly. The arguing in his head is allowed to go on. Ordinary experience confirms one small thing here: a mind that is no longer being interrogated tends to quiet a little. Many things are learned this way, by acting on a starting point before understanding is complete. The limit is plain. The teaching does not promise that the nameless dread will lift, or that any feeling will come on schedule. If the dread is heavy or lasting, he should also speak to a doctor.
