Goddess Tripura Reveals Her Supreme Nature
Tripura Rahasya 20.1
The story · English
Long ago, in the pure realm of Satyaloka, a great gathering took place in the hall of Brahma. It was a meeting about knowledge, and about the finest points of it. Sanaka and his brothers came, and Vasishtha, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhrigu, Atri, Angiras, Pracetas and Narada. Cyavana came, and Vamadeva, Visvamitra, Gautama, Sukra, Parasara, Vyasa, Kanva, Kasyapa, Daksha, Sumantu, Sankha, Likhita and Devala. Many other sages came too, and the best of the royal sages. They argued in loud, lively voices, each point finer than the last. Then all of them turned to Brahma with one question.
They said, "Lord, we are knowers in this world, and we know the higher and the lower. Yet each of us lives differently, according to his nature. Some rest always in deep absorption. Some delight in inquiry. Some are drowned in devotion, some hold to ritual action, and some are busy with worldly affairs, like people turned outward. Which of these is best? Please tell us. Each of us knows his own path, and believes it the best." Brahma saw that their minds were unsettled. He answered, "Great sages, I do not fully know this myself. Only the all-knowing Supreme Lord could know it. Let us go and ask."
So Brahma went with the sages to the lord of gods, Siva, who had come together with Vishnu. There Brahma, maker of the worlds, put the sages' question to them. Siva listened. He understood what was in Brahma's mind, and he saw that the sages were still unsettled. He thought to himself, "Whatever I say here may be wasted. The sages may take it only as my own side, and hear it without trust." So, after thinking, the great lord answered them. "Listen, sages. I do not know this clearly either. So let us meditate on the goddess, the divine Knowledge, the supreme Queen. By her grace we may know even the hidden meaning, and what lies beyond it."
Everyone agreed. The sages, with Brahma, Vishnu and Siva beside them, meditated on the great goddess, Tripura, whose body is pure consciousness. As they all held her in mind, Tripura appeared. She was made of the sky of consciousness, and she was made of sound. Her voice rolled across the open sky, deep as thunder in a cloud. She said, "Sages, tell me quickly what you want, since you meditated on me. No wish is lost for those who hold to me." Hearing that voice, the great sages bowed low. Brahma and the others bowed after them, and praised her in many different ways.
Then the sages spoke to her as Srividya, Queen of the three cities. "We bow to you, great goddess. You bring forth everything, you hold it in yourself, and you draw it all back in. You are always new, because you are never born. You are always fresh, because you never age. You are all, and the essence of all, all-knowing and all-delighting. And you are also none of these, not all, not essence, not knowing, not delighting. We bow to you in front, behind, below, above and on every side. Tell us your higher form, your power and your knowledge. Tell us the fruit, the main means, the seeker, and the one who has succeeded."
They went on. "Tell us the highest limit of success, and who is the best among the successful. Tell it in order, goddess. We bow to you again and again." Asked this way, the great Knowledge began to answer, with compassion for the sages, in clear and weighty words. "Listen, sages. I will tell it all in order. I will draw out the nectar from the ocean of the scriptures and give it to you. That in which this whole world appears like a reflection in a mirror, born, standing and dissolving, is shining always. To the unaware it shows as the world. To the yogis it shines alone in the self, free of thought, still as a deep calm sea."
"Devoted people serve it with great love and without pretense, knowing it as their own nature, one without a second. It is the thread of life behind the senses and the mind. Without it nothing would be. This is my highest form, the supreme Awareness. Far beyond countless universes, above them, in the ocean of nectar, lies the Jewel Island, with a grove of kadamba trees and a house of wish-jewels. There on a couch of the five Brahmas is my beautiful form. The timeless pair is what I call my lower form. Sadasiva and Isana, Brahma, Vishnu and Siva, Ganesa, Skanda, the guardians of the quarters, the shaktis, the hosts of lesser gods, the demons, the gods, the nagas, the yakshas and kimpurushas are all my lower forms, and all are worshipped. Those bewildered by my maya do not know me. Yet it is I who am worshipped by all, and I who give the wished-for fruit. No other is worthy of worship or gives fruit. As a person sees me, so he gets his fruit from me."
"My power, sages, has no limit. Needing nothing, I am one undivided consciousness, and I shine as endless worlds, yet I never leave my own nature. That is my chief power, making the impossible happen. Look with a subtle eye. I am the support of all, I am everywhere, and still I stand alone. Through my own maya I forgot myself and wandered long. Then I knew myself again, and took the place of a student before a teacher. Ever free, free again, I become so again and again, and I make worlds like this one without any material. My powers are too many to count, even with a thousand mouths. My knowledge is of many kinds, dual and non-dual, higher and lower, and so are its fruits. Dual knowledge rests on a second thing, and is meditation, like a dream kingdom. Even that bears fruit, by fixed law. Without long worship of me, the supreme Srividya, how could anyone win the non-dual knowledge? That non-dual knowledge is the pure, supreme consciousness itself. Seeing it in its pure state overcomes the sight of duality."
