The Crowd Follows the Best

Bhagavad Gita 3.21

Meaning · English

Whatever the best person does, ordinary people do the same. Whatever standard that person sets, the whole world follows.

Three words carry it. Shreshtha means the best, the one ranked highest, whether by wisdom, rank or character. Pramana means a standard, a measure, the thing you hold up to check whether something is right. Anuvartate means to walk along behind, to follow in the same track. Krishna tells Arjuna how people actually learn conduct. Most of them do not study rules. They watch someone admired and copy what that person does. Whatever the respected person treats as normal becomes the world's measure of normal. That is the reason Krishna gives for why Arjuna cannot treat his choice as private. He is someone others look to, so his action will be copied, whether he intends it or not. The verse asks Arjuna to see his own weight in other people's eyes and to act with that in mind. Shankara reads the best person as one who knows the Self and still acts, so that others are guided. Ramanuja reads it as a leader whose example shapes the duties of the people. Madhva stresses that the example must match what scripture sets out.

Snow has fallen overnight on a village lane. The first person out walks one line to the well, and by noon every neighbour has stepped into those same prints. The leader's steps are the first prints, and the crowd is everyone who finds the path already made.

1. Pick one small habit others see you do, such as how you speak to a shop clerk, a driver or a child. 2. For one day, imagine someone younger is copying exactly what you do in that moment. 3. At night, spend two minutes recalling one act that you would be glad to see repeated, and one you would not. 4. Tomorrow, repeat the first and quietly change the second.

A grandmother at a family dinner reaches for her phone mid-sentence while her grandson, ten, watches her. Later she scolds him for doing the same. Under this verse she would notice that he learned it from her, not from her words. She would put the phone face down before the meal, keep it there, and say nothing about it. The boy would see the standard rather than hear it. Ordinary experience confirms that children and juniors pick up manners from what adults do more readily than from what they are told. The verse does not promise that the copying will be good, or that the boy will not slip. It does not make her perfect, and it does not say every follower will imitate her. It describes the way the crowd tends to move, and asks the one being watched to take that seriously.
