Acting Without Any Lack

Meaning · English
Nothing is left for me to do, Arjun, in all three worlds. Nothing is unreached that I must reach, nothing ungained that I must gain. Even so, I remain engaged in my prescribed duties.
Three words carry this. Kartavya is duty, what is owed and due to be done. Avaptavya is what is still to be gained, and its negative names something not yet attained, so together they describe a lack, a thing one is still reaching for. Karma is action, here the prescribed work that belongs to one's place. Krishna tells Arjuna that in all three worlds no duty binds him and nothing remains for him to obtain. Nothing is owed and nothing is missing. Yet he says he stays engaged in work. The reason lies in Arjuna's trouble: Arjuna is tempted to think that action is for people who want something, so a person who wants nothing may put it down. Krishna offers himself as the counter-case. If anyone had grounds to stop, he would, and he does not. So action does not have to come from hunger. It can come from fullness. Arjuna is asked to see that freedom from craving is no reason to leave the work. Shankara reads this as the words of one with nothing left to attain, whose action is therefore only for the world's sake. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's compassion, acting though every wish is fulfilled. Madhva reads it as the Lord's wholly free work, set as a pattern for others.
A lamp stands lit in a courtyard at dusk. It gains nothing from the people who pass, and it would not be poorer if no one came. It burns because burning is what it does, and the whole yard is lit. Krishna's work is like that: given from fullness, not collected from need.
1. Pick one ordinary task you do for others today, such as cooking, answering a message, or tidying a shared space. 2. Before starting, ask yourself quietly whether you are doing it to be thanked or because it simply needs doing. 3. Do it start to finish without checking for praise, and notice how your body feels at the end. 4. If thanks never comes, notice that too, and let the task stand complete as it is.
A woman in her fifties has paid the last of her younger brother's school fees. She has nothing left to prove to her family. On Sunday morning she still gets up and starts the big family meal. She wonders why, and whether she is only trapped in old habit. The verse gives her a way to look. She can ask whether she cooks to be counted, or because the meal needs making and she is able to make it. If it is the first, the cooking will leave her watching faces for approval and tired afterward. If it is the second, she can stand at the stove, do the work, and leave it finished. Ordinary experience bears this out: work done to earn a verdict is heavier than the same work done for its own sake. The verse does not promise that she will feel no tiredness, that her family will notice, or that no one will take her for granted. Nor does it say she must keep cooking if her health or her own needs call for rest. It speaks only of where the effort comes from.
