Bhagavad Gita 3.23

Meaning · English

If I ever failed to keep carefully to my work, Arjun, son of Pritha, people would follow my path in every way, and they would copy that failing too.

Krishna uses three ideas here. Karma is action, and in particular the duty that belongs to one's place in life. Vartma is a path, a worn track that others can walk. Anuvartante means following along behind, step by step. Atandritah, translated as carefully, means not drowsy, not slack. The plain sense is this. Krishna says that if he ever stopped doing his duty with full attention, people everywhere would take his way as their own and copy it. People watch those they look up to and shape their habits by them. A lapse in the one watched becomes permission for everyone watching. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just said that whatever the best person does, ordinary people do too. He needs nothing for himself, so his work cannot be for gain. It is for the sake of those who follow. He asks Arjuna to see his own position the same way: his steadiness will be copied, and so will his slackness. Shankara reads Krishna as showing that even one who has no personal need should act, to guide others. Ramanuja takes it as the Lord's own conduct set up as the model of duty for all. Madhva also treats Krishna's way as the pattern people are meant to follow.

A footpath cuts across a wet field. The first walker picks a line, and within a week the grass is gone and everyone steps in the same mud. Whoever walks first does more than cross the field. They draw the track others will use. A person people look up to is that first walker.

1. Choose one task you do where someone younger or newer watches you: a child, a junior colleague, a neighbour. 2. Today, do that task fully and on time, including the dull last part you usually rush. 3. Say nothing about it. Just do it as you would want them to do it. 4. In the evening, note one moment when you caught yourself about to cut a corner in front of them, and what you did.

A father tells his ten-year-old to be on time for school, then stands in the hallway at 7:50, still hunting for his keys and sighing that the day is already lost. The boy watches him and says nothing. The verse changes that moment in small steps. The father sees that the boy is learning from what he does, more than from what he says. So he stops the sighing and finds the keys calmly. He leaves the house the way he wants the boy to leave it, and he says sorry for the rush if he caused one. Nothing is staged. He simply does the ordinary thing with attention, as Krishna describes his own steadiness. Ordinary experience confirms the point. Children and new hires pick up habits from what they see long before they pick up rules. The limit is plain. Careful conduct does not guarantee that the child, or anyone else, will copy it, and it does not make a tired or grieving person stop being tired or grieving. It only means that what a person does is also teaching, whether or not they intend it.
