Worlds Would Collapse

Bhagavad Gita 3.24

Meaning · English

If I did not perform my prescribed duties, all these worlds would perish. I would be responsible for an uncultured population, and I would destroy all these living beings.

Krishna is still answering why he, who lacks nothing, keeps working. Three words carry the verse. Karma is action, here the duty that belongs to one's place. Sankara means a mixing or breaking down, and Krishna applies it to a population that has lost its steadiness and culture. Praja means living beings, the ones born and kept alive by the order of the world. Krishna tells Arjuna that if he stopped acting, the worlds would perish, because people copy what he does, as the previous verse said. He would then be the cause of that breakdown and, in his own words, the destroyer of these beings. The reason is care for others, not need. His work holds up people who are watching. For Arjuna the question is whether walking away from his duty is as private as it feels. Shankara reads the ruin as the disorder that follows when people drop their duties, and says Krishna acts only out of compassion for beings. Ramanuja stresses that the Lord's conduct is the pattern others take as their own. Madhva also treats Krishna's action as instruction for others.

A man tends the signal lamp at a railway crossing. He needs no train himself. If he sleeps one night, every driver coming through trusts a light that is dark. His steady work is what the whole line leans on, and so is Krishna's.

1. Pick one small duty that others quietly depend on, such as the morning meal, a call to a parent, or locking up at night. 2. Do it today on time, even if you are tired or think nobody would notice. 3. Once, ask yourself who would feel it first if you skipped it, and name that person. 4. Do it again tomorrow, and notice whether it feels lighter once you remember who it serves.

A school-bus driver wakes before dawn with a stiff back and a thought: one skipped run will not matter, someone else will sort it out. He lies there counting the reasons. The verse speaks to this moment. Krishna tells Arjuna that his work holds up beings he may never see. The driver can then ask a different question: who is standing at the stop at seven, coats on, waiting? The question moves from how he feels to what rests on him. He may still decide to call in, and he can do it early enough that the route is covered. Ordinary experience confirms that people lean on routines they never think about until one fails. The verse does not say every duty must be done through illness, and it is no replacement for rest or a doctor where one is needed. It does not make the dawn easier or the back less sore. It gives the task a reason beyond mood.
