Lightning on a Dark Cloud

Kanakadhara Stotram 5

Meaning · English

On the chest of Kaitabha's slayer, dark as a bank of rain clouds, she flashes like lightning. May Bhrigu's daughter, mother of all worlds, grant me blessings.

Vishnu's chest is dark and beautiful, like a row of monsoon clouds. Lakshmi shines there, and she stands out the way lightning stands out against that dark. The poet names him as the one who defeated Kaitabha, a demon, so the chest she lights is a strong one. Then she is named twice: mother of every world, and daughter of the sage Bhrigu. Her form deserves honour. The request itself is short and plain: may she send good things my way.

In a jeweller's window, a thin gold ring rests on black velvet. On a white cloth it would barely show. On the black it seems to glow, and the velvet looks deeper for holding it. Lakshmi on Vishnu's dark chest works the same way: each sets the other off, and neither is made smaller.
