By its power the god of love first found a place in the blessed slayer of Madhu. May that slow, languid half-glance of the ocean's daughter fall on me here.

Manmatha is the god of love. Vishnu is called the slayer of Madhu, a demon he once killed. Love could not reach him on its own. It found its first place in him only because she looked at him. Her look is described two ways: slow and unhurried, then gentle and a little drowsy. It is only half turned toward him. The ocean's daughter is Lakshmi, who came up from the sea. The poet asks for that same unhurried look to land on him, here, where he stands.

Picture one candle lighting another. The burning candle tilts slowly toward the cold wick and barely touches it, and the second flame catches. Her slow half-glance is that first flame. The love that wakes in Vishnu is the second one. The poet holds out his own unlit wick and asks her to lean that way once more.
