Heaven Within Easy Reach

Meaning · English

Through her mercy-wet glance even plain minds reach heaven easily. May that glance of the lotus-seated goddess, bright as a lotus's opening heart, give me the nourishment I seek.

Her look is wet with compassion, the way an eye goes soft and damp when someone is moved. That look is so strong that even people with nothing special about their minds reach heaven, and they reach it easily, with none of the long labour it normally costs. Then the poet turns to his own need. He compares her glance to the glowing inside of a lotus that has just opened. He asks it for nourishment: steady growth and plenty, the increase he hopes for.

A shaft of morning sun through a window warms whatever it lands on. The polished table and the old chipped mug get the same heat, and neither does anything to earn it. Her glance works that way. What it gives does not depend on the worth of the one it falls on. That is why even a plain mind finds heaven close at hand.
