Meaning · English
Called Goddess of Speech, Vishnu's beauty, Bearer of Green Herbs, Shiva's beloved: bow to her, at play in making, keeping and ending, young bride of the worlds' one teacher.
People call her by many names. Goddess of Speech. The beauty beside the Lord whose banner carries Garuda, his eagle. The one who carries green plants and so feeds living things. The beloved of the moon-crested god. These sound like four separate goddesses, yet the verse bows to one woman behind all four names. Making the world, keeping it and ending it are her play, not her toil. She is the young bride of the three worlds' one teacher.
Picture a woman who is "Ravi's mother" at the school gate, "Doctor" at the clinic, a wife at home, and a childhood nickname to her sister. Each group knows her by a different name, and each name is true. She is still one person walking through all of them. The four names sit on the goddess the same way.
