What Holds the Body Up

Meaning · English
Food, sleep and sexual life, each used with sound judgement, hold up the body day after day, as a house is held up by its supports.
Vagbhata names three things that carry the body's weight: food, sleep and sexual life. The commentators read the word he uses for the third as sexual life; a less common reading takes it as restraint in sexual life. Either way the point is the same. None of the three is good or bad in itself. What holds the body up is yukti, sound judgement: the right amount, at the right time, suited to the person. He gives the picture himself. A house stands because its posts and beams carry the load. To carry his picture one step further: if one is pulled away or left to rot, the roof sags. The body is held up this way every day, not once and for all. The verse itself stops there. Elsewhere, the wider tradition adds that food feeds agni, the digestive fire, and builds the tissues; sleep restores them; and a measured sexual life keeps strength and ojas, the body's refined essence, from being spent. So the teaching asks for steadiness in three ordinary places: eating, resting and intimacy. What is fitting differs for someone ill, pregnant, very young or old, and good judgement takes that into account.
1. Tonight, choose a bedtime and set a quiet reminder thirty minutes before it. When it sounds, put screens away. 2. Today, eat your main meals at roughly your usual times, sitting down, and stop when comfortably satisfied rather than full. 3. Before sleep, take two minutes to write one line each on how you ate, how you rested and how you felt today, without judging. 4. Tomorrow morning, rise at the time you planned and read those three lines again.
A family doctor would recognise this list. Regular, adequate sleep is widely understood to support mood, attention, appetite control and recovery. Steady, moderate eating supports energy and digestion; agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite. Sexual health and close relationships are counted today as part of overall wellbeing. The idea of judgement over rules also fits modern advice: needs change with age, illness and pregnancy. Where the old idea parts ways is ojas. There is no modern match for a single vital essence, and no good evidence that ordinary sexual activity drains strength. Modern lists of health foundations also usually give movement and social connection their own place, which this short verse does not name, though the classics treat exercise elsewhere.
