Worship for Three Kinds

Gaudapada Karika 3.16

Meaning · English

Seekers are of three kinds, with lower, middling and highest sight. For their sake this worship is taught, out of compassion.

Three words carry this. Ashrama is a stage or station of life, from shram, to toil: a place where a person rests while still working. Drishti is sight, a way of seeing. Upasana is worship, literally sitting near. Anukampa is compassion, a trembling along with another. Gaudapada says seekers stand at three levels of sight: lower, middling, highest. Worship is given for them, and the reason he states is compassion, nothing else. A teacher who knows that everything is one Self sees that not every listener can take that in directly. Some need something to hold, a form, a practice, a place to sit near. So the teaching comes down to meet them. He is not saying worship is empty or only for the dull. He says it is taught for a purpose, and the purpose is care for those who cannot yet see far. The commentators read the three as people of weaker, middle and sharper understanding, and the highest as the one who needs no support. The verse asks the listener to see where they actually stand, without shame and without pretending to a higher view. It also asks them not to look down on someone whose stage is different. The teacher's compassion starts from the listener's real position.

A flight of stairs up to a roof has low steps, middle steps and a last one at the top. A small child needs the low steps. A tall adult barely notices them. The stairs were built so that everyone, whatever their height, can reach the same roof. Worship is the stairway, and the roof is the single Self.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and ask yourself plainly where you stand: what do you actually find easy to hold, a name, a prayer, a lamp, silence? 2. Take that one thing and keep it for a week, at the same hour each day, without adding more. 3. Once this week, when someone's way of praying or understanding looks smaller than yours, stop and notice the thought. Let it pass without comment. 4. Notice who taught you what you now know, and how patiently.

A mother is at the stove when her seven-year-old asks why the moon follows the car. She could explain distance and angle. She says, "It's riding along with us." The child laughs and is satisfied. Years later, a teacher will give the real account, and it will fit what the child already loves about the moon. The verse speaks to that moment. The mother has looked at where the child stands, not at where she herself stands, and has chosen an answer that child can hold. Gaudapada calls the motive compassion, and teaches that worship is given this way for seekers of lower, middling and highest sight. Step by step: first she sees the question is real, then she sees what the child can take in today, then she gives that much and no more. Ordinary experience agrees that people learn in stages, and that a lesson pitched too high is simply dropped. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the child, or any seeker, will move up quickly, and it does not say what the child will make of the answer. It speaks only of the teacher's care.
