Each school of two-ness holds its own conclusions firmly, and they contradict one another. Non-duality contradicts none of them. Non-duality is the highest truth; two-ness is said to be only its difference, a spreading out of it. So for the dualists, whichever way they take it, two-ness stays two-ness. This is why non-duality has no quarrel with them.

Three words carry the teaching. Dvaita means twoness, the view that there are two or more basic things. Advaita means not-two, the view that one reality stands behind them all. Paramartha is made of parama, highest, and artha, thing or purpose: the truth at its deepest level. Gaudapada first notes a plain fact. Each school of dualists is sure of its own settled doctrine, and each contradicts the others. Then he says the non-dual view does not join that fight. He gives his reason in the second half. Non-duality is the highest truth, and twoness is only what difference makes of it, so it sits inside that truth and does not stand against it. Every dualist, whichever way he divides the world, still speaks of twoness. The non-dual view has nothing to refute, because it takes each school as a partial view of the one thing. Shankara's commentary reads the passage this way, as an answer to the charge that a teaching of oneness must be at war with all the rest. The question behind it is why a seeker should not be dragged into argument. The listener is asked to hold the teaching without needing an opponent.

A river reaches the sea by many bends, and people on each bank swear their own bend is the true river. None of them disturbs the water. It carries every bend and fights none. The bends are the rival schools, and the unbroken water is the one reality all of them describe.

1. The next time you hear two people disagree, at home or on the news, listen for ten minutes without picking a side. 2. Ask yourself what each person is actually pointing at. Name one true thing in each view. 3. When you feel the urge to win an argument today, pause for one breath before replying. 4. Notice whether your answer is still needed once you have heard the other side fully.

A grandfather sits at Sunday lunch while his two sons argue over whether to sell the family shop. Each is certain. Each has numbers. The old man feels himself drawn toward one of them. The verse would change the moment in steps. First he notices that both sons love the shop and fear for the family's future, and that this is what they share. Then he hears each plan as an answer to the same worry, not as an attack on the other. Then he speaks to the worry before he speaks to either plan. Ordinary experience confirms that people argue less fiercely once they feel heard. The verse does not promise that the sons will agree, or that the shop will be saved. It does not settle a real choice about money. It says only that the teaching of oneness needs no enemy, and that the one who holds it can listen without fighting.
