This world, which appears in the self, a bundle of mind, speech and breath: all of it is maya, he should reason. Resting in himself, he lets it go and does not call it back to mind. One set in knowledge, or dispassionate, or my devotee who wants nothing, giving up the outward marks of his stage and order of life, moves about beyond the reach of rules.

Krishna says three things to Uddhava. First, what the world is made of as the renunciant meets it: mind, speech and breath. Thinking, talking and the body's going on. He calls all of it maya, from the root ma, to measure out. Maya is a shape given to things, an appearance resting on something deeper. Krishna does not call it nothing. He calls it not final. Second, how to hold it. He says to reason it through (tarka), then, settled in oneself, to let go and not keep recalling it. Third, who may go beyond the rules: the one set in knowledge, the dispassionate one (vairagya, the colour gone out of craving), or Krishna's own devotee who wants nothing (nirapeksha) from the world. Such a person drops the visible marks of a stage of life and wanders outside the reach of vidhi, the rulebook. The commentators take this as said of someone already ripe, not a beginner. It comes here because the forest-dweller's and wanderer's rules have just been laid out, and Uddhava could take the rules for the goal. Krishna says they serve a freedom inside. Uddhava is about to lose his friend's company, and is being given something that does not depend on it.

A builder lifts a house with bamboo scaffolding around it. Once the walls stand and the roof is on, the scaffolding comes down, and nobody calls it a mistake. The outward marks and rules of a stage of life are the scaffolding. The settled, wanting-nothing mind is the house they were put up to raise.

1. Tonight, for five minutes, pick one worry that keeps returning and write it in a single plain sentence. 2. Beside it, note what it is made of: thoughts running, words said or rehearsed, a tight breath. 3. Breathe out slowly five times and put the page down without replaying the worry. 4. When it comes back later, notice that, and let it go again without arguing with it.

A retired headmistress hands in her keys and her staff card on her last afternoon. For thirty years the bell, the register and the title told her who she was. Walking to the gate, she feels the gap where they were. Krishna's teaching, said of a ripe renunciant, speaks to that moment. Reason first: the timetable, the title and the talk in the staffroom were built of thoughts, words and daily habit, and they rested on something that is still walking. Then rest in oneself, let the role go, and stop calling it back to mind each hour. Then the outward marks may fall away without the person falling with them. Ordinary experience confirms that people who hold a role as their whole self feel its loss hardest. The teaching does not remove grief at an ending, and it does not ask anyone to drop duties to others early. It is not a substitute for a doctor or a counsellor where the low mood runs deep. It is said as Krishna's teaching to one ready to receive it, not as a rule for every person at every stage.
