The wise one would play like a child. Skilled, he would go about like a dullard. Learned, he would speak like a madman. He would move through life as one who knows the Veda. He would not take delight in mere Veda-talk, nor be a scoffer, nor an arguer for argument's sake. In dry quarrel and debate he would take no side at all.

Krishna is describing the knower who has gone past the busy stages of life. Four words carry the verse. Balakavat means like a child: free of pose, not guarding his standing. Jadavat means like a dullard, from jada, inert, someone who does not push himself forward. Unmattavat means like a madman, one whose speech does not follow the clever, expected pattern. Haituka comes from hetu, reason, and names the person who argues for the sake of arguing. Krishna says the wise one is skilled and learned, yet looks plain, unambitious and a little odd. The commentators generally read this as outer manner, not real foolishness: the learning is not worn as a badge. He still lives by what the Veda teaches. But he takes no pleasure in Veda-talk for its own sake, he does not mock the tradition, and he does not turn every conversation into a contest. Krishna calls such debate shushka, dry: it has no sap, no feeling and no life in it. Asked to pick a side in it, the wise one picks none. The reason follows from the surrounding teaching. Whoever is trying to rest in the Self has nothing to win from an argument, and each victory feeds the pride he is trying to loosen. Krishna asks Uddhava to hold learning lightly, speak simply, and leave quarrels alone.

In a village square stands an old banyan. Children play in its roots while men argue loudly in its shade. The tree shelters both, speaks to neither, and leans toward no side. The wise one is meant to be like it: rooted, giving shade, and not drawn into the quarrel.

1. Today, when a conversation turns into a contest over who is right, notice the moment it happens. 2. Say one calm sentence, such as "I see it differently, and that is fine," and then stop talking. 3. Spend ten minutes this week doing something with no purpose, such as playing with a child, walking, or sketching, and let it be badly done. 4. Before the day ends, name one thing you knew and did not mention.

A grandfather sits at a wedding feast. Two uncles across the table begin arguing about politics, voices rising, and each looks over to see which side he will take. He smiles, turns to the toddler on the floor beside him, and starts stacking steel cups with her. The verse changes that moment in small steps. He sees the pull to join, and he lets it pass. He answers one question kindly without defending a position. Then he gives his attention to someone who wants nothing from it. The uncles lose their audience, and the argument usually thins out. Ordinary experience confirms that an argument needs a second party and a crowd, and that winning one rarely changes a mind. The limit is plain. Krishna's teaching does not say every dispute is empty. It does not ask anyone to stay silent about a harm done to someone or about a matter needing a decision, and it does not turn a toddler into a cure for family strain. It speaks of dry debate, the kind that feeds only pride.
