The steady person is not disturbed by others, and does not disturb them. He bears harsh and excessive words, and looks down on no one. For the sake of the body he makes no enemy of anyone, as animals do. The one supreme Self is in all beings and rests within each. As it is in vessels of water, so all beings are of one Self.

Three words carry it. Dhira is the steady one, whose mind stays put when pushed. Titiksha, endurance, comes from a root for bearing something sharp. Atma is the Self, what a person is beneath body and name. Krishna tells Uddhava that the steady person does not rattle others and is not rattled by them. When someone talks too much, too loudly or too cruelly, he lets the words pass and does not hit back. He does not treat anyone as beneath him. Krishna then names the usual cause of quarrels: the body. Animals fight over food, place and safety, and a person who fights for those alone lives like an animal. Krishna gives the reason last. One supreme Self is present in every being and also stays within each one. The insulter and the insulted are not two strangers. Water in many vessels is the likeness the text uses. The commentators read it as one Self showing itself in many bodies. This comes in the teaching on the forest-dweller and the renunciant, where life is being pared down. Uddhava is asked to let that same Self be the ground for how he treats people.

Picture one radio station playing into a hundred radios, in kitchens, shops and taxis. Each set has its own crackle and volume, and some argue with the next. The song reaching them all is the same one. The single Self in every being works the same way, and the radios are the many bodies.

1. Pick one person today who usually irritates you, such as a relative, a neighbour or a driver. 2. When they say something sharp, wait for one slow breath before you answer. 3. Answer without a sharp edge, or say nothing. 4. Tonight, take two minutes to notice what you almost fought over, and whether it was only about comfort, pride or being right.

A taxi driver is stuck in traffic when a passenger starts shouting about the fare and calling him a cheat. His chest tightens and a sharp reply is ready in his mouth. The verse would change this one step at a time. First he lets the words land without answering them. Then he sees that the fight on offer is about the body's small claims: money, pride, a few minutes saved. He can say the fare plainly and drive on. He does not treat the man as lower than himself, and the man in the back seat is not made into an enemy. Ordinary experience bears this out: a sharp answer given in the heat is often regretted by evening. The Self in all beings is the text's own teaching, and the text offers it as the reason for such restraint. The limit is plain. The teaching does not make an insult painless, and it does not ask anyone to stay in danger. A driver facing real threat should get away and ask for help.
