Food Serves the Inquiry

When food does not come, he should not sink. When it comes, he should not be glad. He stays steady, knowing that both lie under fate. He should seek food only so much as keeps the breath of life going, and no more. By that life, the truth is looked into. Knowing that truth, he is freed.

Three words carry this teaching. Daiva is fate, what is allotted, from div, to shine: the unseen order that hands out gain and loss. Prana-dharana is holding up the life-breath, which is all that food is for here. Tattva is truth, literally 'that-ness': what a thing really is. Vimucyate means 'is freed', from muc, to loosen, like a knot coming undone. Krishna is describing the renunciant, the last stage of life in the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age. He tells Uddhava that such a person meets an empty bowl without sinking and a full one without delight, because both come from the same allotment. He may still look for food, but only enough to keep the body able to work. The body is kept alive so that the truth can be looked into, and that looking is the real work. Krishna says the one who knows that truth is loosened from bondage. The question behind the teaching is how anyone can live on whatever comes without being tossed about by it. Krishna's answer is that food has a purpose beyond itself, so neither lack nor plenty can become the point. The commentators agree food is a means here, never the goal. What it asks of the listener is a measured, even hand at the table, and a clear sense of what the meal is for.

A lamp needs oil, and a careful person pours just enough to keep the flame going through the evening. Nobody pours oil for its own sake, or sulks because the jar is low. The meal is the oil, the body is the lamp, and the light is the looking into truth.

1. At your next meal, before the first bite, say silently what this food is for: to keep the body able to do today's work. 2. Stop eating when that purpose is met, even if the plate still looks good. 3. If a meal comes late or small this week, notice the first pull of irritation and let it pass without acting on it. 4. When a meal turns out especially good, enjoy it plainly, and notice if you are already hoping for the next one.

A bus driver on a night route pulls into the usual roadside canteen at midnight and finds the shutter down. He is hungry and tired, and his temper is rising. The verse would change that moment in steps. First, he names what he needs: enough to stay alert for the road, not a feast. Then he looks at what is actually there, perhaps a packet of biscuits and water from the tank, and takes that. Then he lets the shut canteen be one more thing the night allotted him, rather than an insult aimed at him. Ordinary experience confirms that an empty stomach shortens the temper, and that knowing this softens it a little. The teaching does not make hunger disappear, and it does not say a driver should go without proper meals. Anyone who is ill, diabetic, pregnant or underweight should follow a doctor's advice about eating, and nothing here replaces it. Nor does it argue for skipping food. It asks for an even mind about whether a meal arrives, and for food to be treated as fuel for what matters to the person.
