Food may come by chance, the finer or the plainer, and he eats it. Cloth comes, and he wears it. A bed comes, and he lies on it. The sage takes up each thing as it arrives. Cleansing, sipping water and bathing the knower does without being commanded, and he keeps the other rules the same way, as I, the Lord, act in play.

Krishna is describing the renunciant, the fourth stage of life. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, and it is not a rule for everyone today. Three words carry it. Yadriccha means chance, whatever comes unplanned. Prapta means what has been reached or received, so the sage takes each thing as it is received and does not go out chasing. Lila means play, the ease of a being who acts with nothing to prove. Krishna says the sage eats the better meal or the poorer one, wears whatever cloth comes, and sleeps on whatever bed is there. Then comes a turn. Washing, sipping water before a meal and bathing are ordinary duties. The knower does them without anyone ordering him, and he keeps other disciplines the same way. Krishna compares this to his own acting, which is free play. It is not a duty he is bound to. The reason it is taught here follows the earlier verses on bearing insult and meeting hunger evenly. A mind that is not pulled by comfort and discomfort has room left for the Self. The commentators take the last line as describing the knower, not the beginner, who is still held up by rules. What it asks of the listener is plain: to keep the discipline and let go of the grasping.

A guest at a friend's house sits where the host points, eats what is served, sleeps on the mat laid out, and still washes his hands and thanks the cook without being asked. The sage is that guest in the world, at ease with whatever is offered and tidy by his own habit.

1. At your next meal, eat what is put in front of you without remarking on it, for the whole meal. 2. Once today, take the lesser seat, cup or place and say nothing. Notice how long the small irritation lasts. 3. Wash your hands before eating, slowly, as an act you have chosen and nobody has ordered.

A young man is on a long train journey. His seat is by the toilet, the only food is what the vendor brings, and he sleeps sitting up. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. He eats what is offered and does not spend the hours composing complaints. He takes the seat as the seat. He still washes his hands and face when he can, because he has chosen to and no one is watching. Ordinary experience confirms that discomfort grows when the mind keeps arguing with it. Nutrition and sleep teaching agree that eating whatever is at hand is harmless when it is enough and reasonably clean, and that washing, regular meals and rest keep the body well. The old teaching goes further than a doctor would. It speaks of a knower whose cleanliness comes from freedom, and that belongs to the text's own account of the self and of the Lord. It does not belong to health advice. The teaching does not make a bad night's sleep restful, does not replace food when a person is truly hungry, and is no reason to ignore illness that needs a doctor.
