नमोऽस्तु नालीकनिभाननायै नमोऽस्तु दुग्धोदधिजन्मभूत्यै । नमोऽस्तु सोमामृतसोदरायै नमोऽस्तु नारायणवल्लभायै

Meaning · English

Bowing to her whose face is like a lotus. Bowing to her born of the milk ocean. Bowing to the sister of moon and nectar. Bowing to Narayana's beloved.

Four bows, each tied to one plain fact about her. Her face is like a lotus. She was born from the ocean of milk, so her first home was water that feeds. She is sister to the moon and to nectar. The word for sister means born of the same womb, so cool light and the drink of life are her siblings. Last, she is the one Narayana loves. The four lines move from her face to her birthplace, then to her family and her husband.

At a family wedding, an aunt introduces a newcomer. Notice her face, she grew up by the sea, her brother is the one who sings, and she is married to Arun. By the end you know who she is, because you know where she belongs. The four bows place Lakshmi the same way.
