Bhrigu's Daughter, Vishnu's Chest
Kanakadhara Stotram 14
Meaning · English
Salutations to the Goddess, daughter of Bhrigu. Salutations to her who rests on Vishnu's chest. Salutations to Lakshmi, whose home is the lotus. Salutations to the beloved of Damodara.
Four bows, four ways of placing her. First by family: she is the daughter of the sage Bhrigu. Then by where she lives on her husband: on Vishnu's chest, the place closest to his heart. Then by her own home: the lotus, the flower she makes her dwelling. Last by love: she is dear to Damodara, a name of Krishna. Each line names her by a different tie, and each tie is its own reason to bow.
At a family wedding, an aunt introduces a woman to a guest: her father is the old teacher, she lives in the house by the pond, she is married to the cousin from Pune. Each detail ties her to something the guest already knows. The four bows greet Lakshmi the same way, through her father, her husband and her home.
