Radiance, World-Mother, Nanda's Son

Kanakadhara Stotram 15

Meaning · English

Bow to her who is radiance, lotus-eyed; bow to her who is plenty, mother of the worlds; bow to her whom gods worship; bow to the darling of Nanda's son.

Four more bows, each pairing a quality with a name. First she is radiance itself, the brightness in anything lovely, and her eyes are shaped like lotuses. Next she is well-being, the plenty that lets life go on, and she is the one who gives birth to the worlds. Third, the gods themselves worship her, so even heaven bows to her. Last, she is the darling of Nanda's son, Krishna, the cowherd boy raised in Nanda's house.

A single lamp in a house at dusk: the same flame lights the faces at the table, warms the room, and draws the neighbors to the door. One flame, many effects. The verse does the same with her, calling her the light in lovely things, the plenty that keeps worlds fed, the one gods honor.
