What Each Salute Brings

Meaning · English
Lotus-eyed, honored Mother, may my salutations to you, which bring wealth, delight every sense, grant a kingdom's splendor, and stand ready to lift away wrongs, stay with me always.
The prayer stops praising her for a moment and praises the act of bowing to her. The hymn lists four things a salutation to Lakshmi does. It brings wealth. It gladdens every sense. It gives the splendor of ruling. It stands ready to pull a person up out of wrongdoing. Then comes the actual request. The singer does not ask for the wealth or the kingdom. The singer asks that the salutations themselves never leave, that they keep hold of "me, me alone" day and night.
A family that asks a neighbor for a basket of mangoes eats well for a week. A family with a mango tree in its own courtyard eats every summer. The singer asks for the tree: the daily habit of bowing, from which the wealth, the gladness and the lifting of wrongs are said to come.
