Speech, Body and Mind

Kanakadhara Stotram 17

Meaning · English

Honoring your sidelong glance, kept as a practice, spreads every aim and every wealth before your servant. With speech, body and mind I worship you, queen of Murari's heart.

The sidelong glance is the thing the whole hymn has been asking for. Honoring that glance is treated as a steady practice, kept the way one keeps a rule, by someone who thinks of himself as her servant. For that servant, it spreads out every aim and every kind of wealth. Then the singer turns to her directly. She is queen of the heart of Murari, Vishnu, the one who defeated Mura. He worships her with speech, with body and with mind, all three together.

A parent calling a child in from a crowded park: the voice calls the name, the arm waves high, and the mind holds nothing else. All three point at one small figure. Worship with speech, body and mind works the same way, every part of the singer turned toward one person, the queen of Vishnu's heart.
