Elephants at Her Dawn Bath
Kanakadhara Stotram 19

Meaning · English
Elephants of the four quarters pour heaven's river over her from golden pots. At dawn I bow to the world's mother, wife of the lord of all, nectar ocean's child.
The first half is a picture. Lakshmi stands while the great elephants who guard the four directions tip golden pots and pour water over her. The water comes from the heavenly river, and the hymn calls it clean and lovely. The second half is the singer's own act, a bow made in the early morning. Three names follow. She is mother of all the worlds. She is wife of the one who rules every world. And she is daughter of the ocean of nectar, the sea she rose from.
Think of a temple festival morning, when priests tip pot after pot of water over the image before anyone else arrives, and only then do people come forward to bow. The washing comes first and the greeting follows. The hymn keeps that same order: the elephants pour, and then the singer bows at dawn.
