Meaning · English

Kamala, dear to the lotus-eyed Lord, look at me with side-glances rippling with a flood of compassion. I am first among the penniless, mercy's natural vessel.

The poet asks Lakshmi for one thing: a look. Not a full gaze, but the sidelong glance, the corner of the eye, which the hymn treats as where her kindness spills out. Those glances ripple, pushed by a flood of compassion. Then he gives his reason. He is first among people who own nothing, so he is the most fitting place for mercy to land. He calls himself mercy's natural vessel. He did not stage his need to earn pity. His emptiness is real.

A doctor walks into a crowded emergency room. She does not go first to whoever shouts loudest or can pay the most. She goes to the person in the worst shape. Need sets the order. The poet makes the same case: having nothing at all puts him at the head of the line for Lakshmi's look.
