A Daily Kind Look
Kanakadhara Stotram 21
Meaning · English
Goddess, ruler and mother of the world, lovely-limbed beloved of the lotus-eyed Lord, be gracious. Afraid of poverty, I take shelter in you. Look on me daily with kind side-glances.
The singer gathers up names for her. She is goddess, ruler of the world, and mother of all people. She is auspicious in every limb, and the lotus-eyed Lord is her very life. Then comes the plain request. His heart is frightened of being poor, and he has come to her for shelter. He does not ask for a heap of gold. He asks her to look at him every single day, from the corner of an eye that holds kindness.
A grandmother at the stove does not turn around when a child walks into the kitchen each morning. She glances sideways, sees him, and knows he is hungry. That quick look is enough, and breakfast follows. The singer asks for the same thing: not a grand audience, but a kind sideways look, given again every day.
