Yoga Sutras 2.48

Meaning · English

From this, the pairs of opposites no longer strike or overpower.

Two words carry the sutra. Dvandva means a pair, two things yoked together: heat and cold, gain and loss, praise and blame. Abhighata means a blow, a striking against. With the negative prefix, anabhighata is no striking, no being beaten down. Tatah means 'from that', pointing back to the seat described just before. The plain sense: once the seat is firm and without strain, the pairs of opposites stop landing as blows. They still arise. The body still meets heat and cold, hunger and fullness. They no longer knock the sitter off the seat. Patanjali says this because a seat is only useful if it holds. Discomfort and pleasure pull the attention away, and practice breaks. The sutras before give a seat built on steadiness, ease and effort loosened, and this sutra names what that seat yields. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the pairs as cold and heat and the like, and says one who has mastered the seat is not overcome by them. The commentators generally follow him, taking the result as endurance in the body that makes the next step, breath, possible.

A tall tree with deep roots stands through a storm. Wind pushes the branches one way, then the other, and rain gives way to dry sun. The tree is touched by all of it and is not uprooted. The seat is the root; the pairs are the weather moving across.

1. Sit for five minutes today on a chair or the floor, in the seat you have found: steady, without strain. 2. When an itch, a chill, warmth or an ache appears, name it silently as 'cold' or 'warm', 'pleasant' or 'unpleasant'. 3. Notice whether the seat holds while that sensation is there. Do not chase it away. 4. Once during the day, when you feel too hot or too cold, stay with it a moment and watch how it strikes you.
