Even the gods practised

Meaning · English
Brahma and the other gods were devoted to the practice of the breath, and through it they became free of the fear of death. Therefore one should practise the breath.
The verse is an argument from example. It names Brahma, the creator, and says the other gods, the tridasha, stood with him. The commentary reads 'Brahma and the rest' as the highest beings, and adds its own point: if they needed this practice, how much more does anyone else. Pavana-abhyasa is 'practice of the wind', meaning the breath, which the tradition calls prana, the life-force carried by the air. The commentary says this practice means the breath worked in its parts: the outbreath, the inbreath and the hold, called kumbhaka. Antaka means 'the one who ends', which is death, or time as it brings an end. The fear it names is the fear of that ending. The text says the gods turned to the breath because of this fear, and that the practice freed them from it. This is the Pradipika's claim, not something shown. Then comes the instruction itself: because of this, practise. The text gives its reason first, so the reader is persuaded before being told. It asks for steady, repeated practice, the meaning of abhyasa. It gives no count, no ratio and no method here. Long holds can harm a person, so nothing in the verse should be read as permission to push the breath. The details come in the verses around it and are learnt with a teacher.
A man sits in a hospital corridor waiting for news about his wife. His chest is tight and his breath is short and high. Slow breathing is something a family doctor may suggest in such a moment, because lengthening the outbreath settles the body's alarm response for a while. That is well established in general terms, and it fits the old idea that the breath and the fear of loss are tied together. The text goes further. It says the breath practice frees the gods from the fear of death itself. Today's medicine does not say that breathing ends that fear, and it does not say any practice changes how long a life lasts. What is reasonable to say is that steady breathing can ease anxiety in the moment, and that a calmer person meets frightening things more clearly. Prana as a life-force has no match in physiology. Breath holds can cause dizziness, and people with heart, lung or blood pressure problems, or who are pregnant, should ask a doctor before trying them.
